Everything Is At Stake: A Personal Appeal from author Charles McCain

Matthew Shepard weighed less than one-hundred-five pounds when he beaten to death by two macho guys in Wyoming. One-hundred-five pounds. The two guys who killed him didn’t prove their masculinity. They just proved that two strong men could beat to death a twenty-one year old gay guy who weighed fifteen pounds less than the minimum weight specified for a great dane by the American Kennel Club.

For a gay guy like myself, and for my gay brothers and sisters across America, I can truthfully say that everything we have worked for in the last years is at stake on Election Day.

If Romney is elected, a new Dark Age will descend on gay men and women in America. We are not only in his gun sights but in the gun sights of his fellow Mormons who despise us beyond reason.

In the last twenty years, we have fought to be included as full members of the human family; to be equal under the law to other Americans; to serve our country in the armed forces; to achieve the smallest measure of dignity and respect.

If Obama loses and Romney wins, every single thing gay people have hoped for and prayed for will be swept away. All that we have achieved — with the support of our straight allies throughout America — will be as if it never was.

If you know and care about a gay friend or family member, please remember this when you vote.

Thank you,

Charles McCain
