I remember first seeing Christian Bale when he was just a lad and starred in Empire of the Sun, one of my favorite movies. It is based on an autobiographical novel of the same name by J.G. Ballard, who experienced the events portrayed in the movie. Later, Mr. Bale starred in other movies and continues to be a successful movie star, I think. I don’t follow Hollywood that closely. Not that I’m a snob about it. I always enjoy salacious gossip about movie stars. It’s just that I don’t have the time.
So when I did a bit of reading about Christian, (we’re on first name basis already), I discovered he is not completely right in the head, as we say in the South. For instance, he once said of all the characters he had portrayed in movies, the one he most identified with was, you guessed it, Patrick Bateman, the serial killer in American Psycho. Makes you wonder if his wife got rid of all the sharp knives in kitchen.
Of more concern, how much time did he spend hanging out with stockbrokers and did that really prepare him for the role of a serial killer? I don’t want to know the answer.
