They Voted Him In

Unlike any other dictator of the 20th Century, Hitler actually came to power legally through the ballot box as part of a coalition of parties. As reviled as he is today, millions of Germans freely supported Hitler. He used modern campaign techniques never seen before in Germany including constant speaking on the radio and barnstorming the country by plane so he could speak in six or more cities a day. Hitler certainly had an effect on people:

Hysterical women picked up stones he’d trodden on as souvenirs and the most reasonable of people behaved like lunatics.
