U-Boat Bases and Bunkers: Saint Nazaire: British commandoes attacked the locks to the Saint Nazaire drydock on 28 March 1942 by ramming HMS Campbeltown, which had been filled with explosives, into them. The destroyer then detonated on a delayed charge severely damaging the drydock locks. Consequently, a new lock had to be constructed to connect the U-Boat Bunker basin to the Loire estuary since prior to the attack, all U-Boat traffic passed through the drydock locks.
