U-Boat Bases and Bunkers: U-Boat Bunker construction was a massive undertaking which required round-the-clock work. Each site would run two twelve hour shifts with up to 15,000 men working at once. Huge arc lights and searchlights were used to illuminate the work site at night and the lights were only turned off when an air raid siren sounded. Many workers were killed or injured in accidents that occurred when the work site was plunged into sudden darkness.
