U-18 first sank on 20 November 1936 after colliding with an escort vessel. 12 of the 20 crew survived and the boat was raised 8 days later. Her extensive repairs and shake-down, prior to being recommissioned, took 10 months – 4 months longer than the time it took to build her originally.
