Three special assaults on Gibraltar using secret weapons were planned by Italy’s naval commando force (X MAS) for the fall of 1940. The first and second assaults both ended when the submarine transporting the commandos was sunk by routine British destroyer sweeps. The third operation was aborted as a result.
