Although unfounded, Winston Churchill had a reputation in the US as being a drunk; this before FDR met him and embarked on our close cooperation in World War Two. When notified Churchill had become Prime Minister of Great Britain, FDR said, “Churchill was the best man England had, even if he was drunk half the time.”
